GIMP Effects/Filters 1

Hi there!~ Here I've compiled a list of some of my favourite effects and filters which I use regularly on the program GIMP! You can use these in banners, buttons, avatars/icons, well... basically anything you're making, but it has to be on the program GIMP. ^^

Following the instructions

Now, the instructions you'll see in this guide are based around the File menus near the top of the screen you see when the GIMP interface loads. They look something like this:

Our Base Image

Now... let's start off with a base image... Lucario, yay! Think of this base image as the default, non-edited image, and we're going to perform experiments (effects) on it to make it look awesome! <3 Now, remember that you can undo an effect/filter by pressing Ctrl and Z on your keyboard, or right-click somewhere on the picture you're editing on GIMP, go to "Edit" and then click "Undo". :D

The Base Image:

Video Scanlines

Video Scanlines are useful for many different images!~ They can brighten an image considerably~ =) There are many different video scanlines to choose from. To get to the Video Scanlines effect, follow these instructions:

Filters > Distorts > Video

A pop-up window will pop up looking like the one below:

As you can see, there's many different types of scanlines to choose from. I'm going with the "3x3", and now this is what our base image (Lucario) looks like:

Softglow

Softglow is a soft, glowy effect which is great for making a banner/splash, etc look glowy and mysterious~ <3 To get to the Softglow effect, follow these instructions:

Filters > Artistic > Softglow

And this is the Softglow'd Lucario:

Black and White

This is also called the greyscaled effect. To get there follow these instructions:

Colors > Desaturate

Then just click OK for the pop-up window thingy, and yep, then your image is turned into a greyscaled image!

Mosaic

The Mosaic effect works best for background textures and stuff, and usually not on the actual image, like Lucario, but anyway, here's the instructions:

Filters > Distorts > Mosaic

And here's Lucario with the Mosaic effect in place:

Polar Coordinates

This effect actually has like, nothing to do with the name. It kind of well... distorts the image into a different pose. The results can be quite funny~ The instructions are:

Filters > Distorts > Polar Coordinates

Then just click OK for the pop-up window that should pop-up, and voila! Now you have your distorted Lucario! x3

Convolution Matrix

This is one of the more complicated effects, requiring a bit more effort and clicks to get there, but it's worth it! The convolution matrix makes some really awesome coloring effects depending on where you put the number 1 in! I'll explain more later~ The instructions to get there are:

Filters > Generic > Convolution Matrix

After following the instructions above, a pop-up window should pop-up. It looks like this:

See the number 1 in the middle of all those boxes? Well just replace one of the zeros somewhere else in the 'matrix' with a number 1. This is what I did to get the effect on Lucario below:

Lucario:

Conclusion

Well... this ends this guide for now~ I'll be sure to add more later though... but for now, please enjoy what this guide has so far~ <3
