Pixel-Over Tutorial

Hi there! Here is a really awesome tutorial written by JirachiFan that will teach you how to pixel over! Remember to click the image previews to see them at full size!

step 1

This tutorial teaches you how to draw a sprite based on a high-resolution, non-sprite render. First, you need to find the image to be traced, I downloaded a Java Duke image. I am not very good at spriting or I am in a rush, I could not make the Duke sprite look better.

Open your GIMP or Photoshop, and paste the image. This tutorial is for image editors that has layer feature.

Resize the image to about 64 x 64 to 128 x 128, that's the size of sprites.

Create a new layer to draw the sprite.

step 5

First, outline the sprite by using the Pencil tool.

Here's the result without the original render on the back:

Use Paint Bucket tool to color the sprite.

step 8

Add shading, remember to recycle, reuse and reduce the numbers of different colors.

Use a lighter color on stroke of highlight areas.
