About Pokemon Movesets

Hi there!~ So! This is my first Pokemon-related piece of information I've written 100% by myself (Misakii)!~ =D I'm not very good at writing Pokemon content, but please read and tell me what you think!~

This article talks about Pokemon movesets in the Pokemon games, and how they can benefit your Pokemon team. =)

A Pokemon moveset is a set of moves that Pokemon can use in battle. Maybe they are part of a strategy, tactic, or something similar. ^_^

what you need

  • A Pokemon Diamond, Pearl or Platinum game
  • A Nintendo DS, DS lite, or DSi (to play your Pokemon game on =P)
  • At least one Pokemon in your party/team

step one

Okay now, the first step is to get all the Pokemon you'd like to make a moveset for in your party, or team, whichever you want to call it. xP. In this tutorial, I'm going with one of my favourite bug-type Pokemon, Butterfree!

step two

Okay, now you've decided on your Pokemon, (by the way, you can only have up to 6 in your party/team) we need to take a look at all the moves it can learn. You can go to this awesome website named Marriland which has a Pokedex which you can type in a Pokemon's name, and it'll come up with a page with all it's stats, movepool, and lots of other useful stuff as well. So, with my Butterfree, searching it up in Marriland came up with this page. Click on it to see, and scroll down to the part with all its moves. The chart shows what level the move(s) are learnt, and what moves can be taught via TM/HM. Remember, you have to search up what Pokemon you're creating a moveset for though. ^^

step 3

Now that we've got out movepool (the set of moves that can be learnt by a Pokemon), we have to decide what moves are going to be useful, in battle, as well as moves that can raise [your Pokemon's stats] or lower [your opponent's Pokemon's stats]. Some powerful moves also help alot in battle. =D

The full list of Butterfree's moves that it can learn, are below (by the way, "lvl" stands for level):

  • Lvl 1: Confusion
  • Lvl 10: Confusion
  • Lvl 12: Stun Spore
  • Lvl 12: Sleep Powder
  • Lvl 16: Gust
  • Lvl 18: Supersonic
  • Lvl 22: Whirlwind
  • Lvl 24: Psybeam
  • Lvl 28: Silver Wind
  • Lvl 30: Tailwind
  • Lvl 34: Safeguard
  • Lvl 36: Captivate
  • Lvl 40: Bug Buzz

So from up that list, I'll choose what moves I think will be useful. ^_^ Continue up to step 4 to learn more. =D

step four

  • Sleep Powder / Stun Spore
  • Whirlwind
  • Bug Buzz
  • Silver Wind

So, you see that moveset above? ^_^ Well, let me explain!~ Sleep Powder can put an enemy to sleep. If you prefer Stun Spore, you can paralyze your enemies instead. This makes them unable to do anything, which is good (well for you it is, anyway ^^)

Whirlwind is good for after putting your enemy to sleep, (or paralyzing it), then it forces the opponent to switch out their Pokemon (as Whirlwind blows out an enemy's Pokemon and brings out another random one from your opponent's party/team) . Then you can put the next Pokemon your opponent sends out to sleep/paralyzation.

After you've put all your opponent's Pokemon to sleep or that they are all paralyzed, you can pulverize them with Silver Wind, which can also raise all your stats, or Bug Buzz, which is a really powerful Bug-type move.

The downsides of this strategy though, that the move Whirlwind always goes AFTER the opponent makes their move, so it's good to buy lots of "Iron" and "Zinc" items for Butterfree to strengthen its defence and Sp. defence to make it able to withstand all the hits from the enemy Pokemon.

So its also really good to find out the weaknesses of your moveset, so you can work on them. ^_^ I usually have around 4 Pokemon with special movesets or strategies, and the 5th and 6th ones are my last resorts which have extremely powerful moves to KO the enemy if they survived everything.

Conclusion

I hope this article/guide helped you in some way for your Pokemon team, or that you found this useful and interesting. ^_^
